SPN - ep. 8.11 review

Okay, this just ticks me off. I had just written a whole review and pft! it vanished!! *deep breath* One more time...

[Spoiler (click to open)]I have to say that I loved this episode, though I think that the writers might have written it simply so that they could get Dean into chain-mail and leggings - not that I'm complaining! I'm sure that screenshots of that are now on laptop backgrounds and icons everywhere! :)

There were so many things that I liked: the return of Charlie, Dean in chainmail and leggings (did I mention that ;) ), the boys actually having fun together and not being angry with each other, and a good case. It was fun and playful and I enjoyed every minute of it!

While there was much to like there were, as always, questions that tended to pop up for me. For example - as Dean had no idea what larping was prior to meeting Chuck, when did he have the time to gain enough expertise that he was familiar with fake swords and plotting medieval-ish battle plans? Why is it that the majority of the female characters on the show are either petite with long, dark hair, or are of variable height, and have long, curly blonde hair? Why is it implied that Dean is somehow still pining for Lisa when that relationship is deader than a doornail and never really seemed to be all that believable in the first place (to me, anyway). Alas, 'tis a mystery! ;p

Have not seen the promo's for next week, but it's these little nuggets of gold that keep me going... :)

Dean/Lisa was never believable because of the way it was suddenly just tossed in. But I think they were trying to reference the Dean-Benny 'break-up' with Charlie's comment last night.

I think that the strategy thing was maybe just showing that Dean's been hunting for so long that he has strategy ability? Instead of it being a direct LARPing thing.

The women in the show start to bug me. In particular the tendency for all of the love interests to be petite brunettes. ESPECIALLY Sam's girlfriends because you go form Jess to all these tiny, brunette girls all on top of each other.

(Although, Sam in a ponytail needs to happen more often. It just does.)

I never thought of Dean-Benny!!! I like that much better than Dean/Lisa and now I like the ep even more! I rather liked Benny and I hope that they bring him back.

As for the larping, it just seemed rather odd that Dean could tell that the fake sword had good balance. Sometimes I think that they make Dean almost like a split personality - the big, somewhat dimwitted, kid who just wants to goof around and have fun, and the driven, deadly hunter. Maybe it's a coping mechanism?

And, yeah, I totally agree about the women in the show. Every time it's another tiny woman with long dark hair I can't help but think 'here we go again, another brunette to mess with the Winchesters'. The show definitely seems to have a type. Even the somewhat different, 'quirky', characters look a little the same (Anna and Charlie).

(Sam with ponytail... <3333 :) )

I think that Dean's Smart/Stupid/Silly act is supposed to be a type of coping mechanism. He isn't well educated (although, GEDs are actually harder to get than high school diplomas, but why buck the tradition of Hollywood lying otherwise?), but he's been crafty since the beginning. He created the EMF and came up with rock salt bullets. Dean is smart, just not educated or a 'book' guy.

It just aired here. I enjoyed it in spite of myself though I still found it awkward and forced. Dean pining for Lisa? Do you mean where Charlie asked him if he'd recently broken up with someone? I thought that alluded to Benny. One of my fave bits was when the LARPer called them on their fake FBI badges :)

Yes, the story line was a bit contrived which made it a tad odd, but I really liked it for its off the wall-ness :)

I had such a duh! moment regarding Charlie's breakup question when I re-watched the ep. Originally I had missed the very first bit in the show where they go over what happened before and didn't catch that it was Benny that they would be talking about. Without it, my mind went to Lisa as his last relationship and totally skipped Benny. Sometimes, I swear, tap my head and all you'll hear is echoes ;p
And, yeah, the looks on their faces when they're called on the badges was priceless :)

There was one moment I thought was rather wonderful: when Dean broke into the freedom speech and Sam said "it's the only one he knows". Maybe I'm crediting the writers with being smarter than they are, but I read some subtext there that captured the spirit of the SPN we know and love.

When I heard what Sam said I was actually a bit ticked because I thought that Sam was putting Dean down - implying that he wasn't all that smart and it was the only one he ever learned.

But I like your pov much better! :) Thinking of it that way, that bit does give me the warm fuzzies :)
