SPN - ep. 8.5 review

I am so late with this! Rl happened - repeatedly - and then I wanted to watch the ep. again because I have such mixed feelings about it. But anyways, excuses aside, here goes....

[Spoiler (click to open)]
Dean and Sam: From what I've read, this season's ep's are supposed to be all about the sub-text, and I keep going back to what Benny told Dean in the car about his life.  So, would that be a metaphor for John keeping the boys at 'sea' and ripping the throat out of Sam's potential life with Jess, or Dean destroying the possible life with Amelia? Or - and this one's way out there - Benny and Andrea are a skewed Dean and Sam, with Dean being Benny and Sam as Andrea (or vice-versa) - obviously without the normalcy, where Lucifer/evil/whatever, ripped them apart and, interestingly, they're both monsters to some degree.
Meh, what do I know ;)
However,  it does tie nicely with the ramped up Wincest theme where Sam appears to have bonded with Amelia because they've each lost somebody who was important to them, or, if I stretch it, the love of their life.

Sam: Poor guy doesn't have much of a storyline right now, other than pining for Amelia, being ticked off at Dean, and developing a rather surprising ability to fix things that he's never demonstrated before. And I was also a bit surprised at his reaction to Benny given that he's usually trying to see the good in monsters and humans alike, and they did work with Lenore before.

Benny: I like him! Which probably means they're going to kill him off soon as they do to most all their supporting characters ;p

Amelia: Haven't seen much of her, but apparently she drowns her sorrows in alcohol, forces injured dogs on people who likely can't adequately care for them given their lifestyle, and doesn't follow up on said injured animal until the dog literally runs over and hops in her lap. And it may be just me, but for a moment there while she was sitting on the couch, she seemed to bear a striking resemblance to Ruby/Genevieve.

Anyway, my two cents. I liked the ep, but I'm not at all sure about the hidden meaning, if there indeed is any. Would love to hear other people's take on it!

Late response due to living at the ass end of the world and being 2 weeks behind.
Since Ben Edlund wrote this one I think you can assume, yeah, every damn word Benny said was meaningful and relevant to Sam and Dean. I'm getting a "they're both monsters" theme from the show, too. That moment at the end of the found footage where the girl was saying we didn't start out as monsters, and it shouldn't have ended this way, I thought was quite poignant. Yeah, it shouldn't!

That bit of footage that you mentioned rather screamed to me foreshadowing of something that may become incredibly important in the show.
Not sure how they would do a 'Dean is a monster' thing when he wouldn't have been able to leave purgatory unless he was human. Maybe they mean a metaphorical monster because of things he had to do while he was there??? Which wouldn't really make sense because if Dean torturing in hell didn't make him a monster before, then what could he have done in purgatory that was so much worse?
GAH! Idk! I hate waiting to find out...! >:( ;p

SPN has made a habit in the past of sneaking in apparent throwaway episodes that turn out to be a summary of the whole season. Yeah, I'm thinking what they're saying is that the life has made monsters out of Sam and Dean, in a figurative rather than literal sense. They've been getting increasingly desensitized and gratuitously violent. You don't get the feeling that either of them really care about anything or anyone any more (least of all each ohter) they're just going through the motions.
