SPN - ep. 8.4 review

So far, this is the first ep that I fell asleep before the end and had to catch up later and, well,.... it was different.
[Spoiler (click to open)]At first it reminded me of Ghostfacers, with the cinema verite method of filming, only without the humour and, sadly, without  a lot of Sam and Dean. It's nice to be able to give the actors a bit of time off, especially with Jared being a new dad and all, but did they have to tease us about Sam and Dean talking about their year apart and not tell us anything about it! *Hmph*, moving on....
For a bunch of students they certainly seemed to be able to afford a heck of a lot of cameras, going by the number of angles. And, if it were me, there's no way I'd be able to stay in the same blood splattered room as the body of my murdered boyfriend, and the guy I murdered, and edit a whole lot of footage to make the final vid... plus, it looks like she managed to take a shower and reapply her makeup at some point as well...   Anyway, quibbles aside, it was an interesting take of the 'monster's' pov, if rather un-involving. I just kept wondering when Sam and Dean were going to show up again.
To be honest, I'm still not sure what to make of this ep. Were the characters of Micheal and Brian supposed to mirror Sam and Dean? In which case, is Dean some sort of monster? Did he make some sort of deal in order to get out of Purgatory? Which wouldn't really make sense as only humans were supposedly able to escape, but it does seem (to me) as if perhaps Dean may have perhaps been changed in some fundamental way other than the trauma of surviving there. It could also explain why he let the girl go so easily.

I'll likely laugh at my wild theories once all is finally revealed, but I do so love to speculate! :)

The monster at the end of this season?
I noticed the "Dean is a monster" theme in Ep 3, too. Back when Dean told Jo he was 90% crap and asked her what would be left when you took that away, and then the show started stripping away all the 'crap', I can't believe that it was their intention to conclude there was nothing at the heart of him than a monster, but that's the conclusion the show seems to have been leading to ever since Repo Man. Let's just pray that by the end of the season someone remembers that what was once at the heart of Dean was his heart!

I really like that - 'the heart of Dean was his heart' - very well put!
